ReviewsReview of Greenland IIReviewed By: Larry RiceCanoe and Kayak Magazine 4/2/2008 Folbot has been manufacturing since 1933. Folbot has built a loyal following by offering it's products direct to the end consumer, thus avoiding the markup of the middlemen. The last time I paddled a Folbot was 10 years ago, when I reviewed it for this (Canoe & Kayak) magazine. I liked it then for what it was - a no-frills , roomy, folding kayak easy on the budget. I like it even more, much more, now. The design of the Greenland II, Folbot's current folding double, has been immensely improved over that of it's predecessor, but it's just as affordable. Taking a cue from other techno age products (tennis rackets and snow skis to name a few), Folbot has gone to high strength composite materials (plastic and non corrosive aluminum) instead of wood to forge the frames of it's latest models. They claim the new materials require less maintenance, are stronger and more durable than wood, and weigh less. That last claim is certainly true: at 62lbs the Greenland II is a light weight for a gear swallowing 17 foot kayak with a 34 inch beam. The Greenland II arrives in two full zippered bags. Inside one (the size of a standard suitcase) is the hypalon laminated hull and polyester deck assembly (available in various colors), cross frames, seats, and back rests. The other, longer bag contains the keel, side frames, and all the longerons and struts. Set up instructions are thorough and easy to follow. Folbot cautions that the first assembly will take about an hour, and that's exactly what it took me. Next time I'm confident I can cut that time in half. No tools are necessary. The frame went together smoothly; parts are clearly marked and fittings snap soundly in place. The Greenland II's zippered decks with velcro storm flaps make inserting the skeleton, sometimes a trying affair on other foldables, exceedingly simple. Zippering the decks also makes equipment storage easier. Inflatable air sponsons tighten the skin while providing additional flotation. On the water, the Greenland II is a solid cruiser - not the fastest boat on water but a stable, dependable performer, kind of like a utilitarian van that will carry passengers and a passel of cargo anywhere you want to go. The boat tracks well, seats are simple but comfortable foam blocks with tilting back rests, and the high cockpit coaming and peaked decks ward off waves. Under - deck storage abounds for longer expeditions. Add a small dry bag on the deck, and off you go for a month or more. Accessories you'll want for serious touring include a foot rudder kit and spray deck. Other options include downwind sail rig, wilderness repair kit and a solo seating kit. Folbot suggests test paddling their product to assure satisfaction, adding that all boats come with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and a full refund guarantee. The Greenland II is a good choice for most paddlers for most destinations. It's a versatile, economical boat backed by a consumer responsive company that's been around for a long time.
